Last update: 20th December 2021
For accuracy and version issues with HadCET see the post “CET Issues“, this page only shows selected plots of the data.
This page shows the summer (June, July, August) daily temperature maxima (Tmax), and winter (December, January, February) daily temperature minima (Tmin) of the Central England Temperature series known as HadCET, which can be downloaded from here:
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/hadobs/hadcet/data/download.html
The following two figures show all the data, which runs from 1878 to present, with blue/red squares marking:
- Summer maxima greater than 30 C
- Winter minima less than -6 C
The plots above reveal the following:
- Hot summer days in recent decades were hotter and more numerous than in the period before
- Cold winter nights in recent decades were milder and less numerous than in the period before
Note that winter 2010/11 (shown in more detail below) was cold relative to winters of the last 30 years, but was not exceptional (at least in terms of temperature) over the entire period from 1878.
WINTER (December/January) MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES
To identify the coldest winters data are plotted below for both maxima and minima, and including the months of November and March, starting with winters 2007/08 to 2015/16, and ending with winters 1878/79 to 1884/85.
